For three decades now, gamers around the world have been captivated by the little yellow dot-chomping hero, and his legacy continues to be celebrated.

On May 22, 1980, Namco released Pac-Man to arcades in Japan. The game was an instant hit, and soon spread to other parts of the world.

How Did Pac-Man Come About?

1. Pac-Man was designed by a young artist named Toru Iwatani. 2. Iwatani got the idea for Pac-Man when he was eating a pizza with some friends. The shape of the pizza matched the outline of a mouth.

1. The name “Pac-Man” is a combination of “pac” (a sound often made when eating) and “man” (since the protagonist is a human).

The iconic yellow character with the big mouth first appeared in arcades, and the rest is history. In honor of Pacman’s 30th anniversary, we have looked at memorable moments in the history.
